There is certainly nothing wrong with the latter, but seeing how Jirsa uses it to create a balanced portrait with the light behind the subject is a great lesson in balancing ambient and artificial light. This prevents him from having to significantly underexpose the subject in order to not overexpose the ambient light, which would result in a significant adjustment in post-processing and a resultant drop in image quality, often creating visible noise on the subject.
