Spring and summer mark what’s known as “kitten season,” a time when the number of kittens entering shelters skyrockets. In 2023 alone, over 1.5 million kittens were admitted to animal shelters in the U.S. Most of these kittens are younger than five months old and in dire need of care. Although overall kitten intakes have slightly decreased since 2022, the number is still significantly higher compared to past years, highlighting a persistent challenge for shelters nationwide. The reality is that shelters are often unprepared to handle the surge, leading to overcrowding and, tragically, many kittens face euthanasia due to lack of resources and space.
In the midst of this crisis, two particular kittens have found themselves in a precarious situation. Orphaned and too young to survive on their own, they were brought to a local rescue with minimal resources.
