Four top European golfers, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Richard Bland, have resigned from the DP World Tour after being sanctioned for playing in the Saudi Arabia-funded tour LIV Golf. The players were fined £100,000 each for participating in LIV's opening tournament last June. They lost an appeal and had until May 3 to pay their fines.
As a consequence of their actions, they will be unable to play for Europe against the US in Rome, and cannot serve as future captains or vice captains under the tour's rules. Westwood confirmed he has paid his fine and called it "a sad day."
