A Routine Surgery Gone Wrong

It all started with what Craig described as a "minor surgery" on his head. He didn't divulge the specifics of the procedure, but what followed was anything but minor.

"It was a botched surgery, and they nicked my occipital nerve in the back of my head," Craig shared during a candid appearance on his co-star Maurice Benard's (Sonny Corinthos) YouTube series, "State of Mind."

The impact was immediate and debilitating. Craig found himself in excruciating pain, unable to move his head without agonizing discomfort.

"For three or four months, I couldn’t move my head to the left, to the right, up or down," Craig recounted, his voice tinged with a mix of anger and disbelief. "I couldn’t lay it on a pillow."

Insomnia, Hallucinations, and a Desperate Search for Relief

As if the physical pain wasn't enough, Craig, who already suffered from insomnia, was plunged into a nightmarish world of sleep deprivation.

"I did not sleep," Craig emphasized, his words painting a vivid picture of his torment.

"When I’m telling you, I did not sleep for four months…I finally started to understand how that can affect your mind and your body. I was hallucinating…that’s how bad it was.”

Desperate for relief, Craig turned to the painkillers prescribed by his doctors. But what began as a means to manage the pain quickly spiraled into a dangerous dependence.

A Near-Fatal Overdose and the Road to Recovery

"I was in so much excruciating pain from morning till night that I was taking these things like, [almost begging the medication to] ‘just please help me,'" Craig confessed, his voice heavy with regret.

The consequences were nearly fatal.

"[I] ended up OD’ing [and] had to go to the ER because I took too much, uh, what was it, Vicodin or something?" Craig revealed, sending a collective gasp through the audience. "It was the worst three [or] four months of my life.”

The overdose served as a wake-up call, forcing Craig to confront the severity of his addiction and the fragility of his health. He embarked on a long and arduous journey of recovery, finding solace in running and embracing a newfound appreciation for his well-being.

"That’s when I started doing the runs," Craig explained, his voice filled with gratitude. "[And was] when I finally got better because I was so grateful to have my health."

A Story of Resilience and Hope

Bryan Craig's story is a stark reminder of the dangers of painkiller addiction, even when prescribed by doctors. It's also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of seeking help when needed.

And while "General Hospital" fans might be disappointed by Craig's brief return as a vision of Morgan, his candid confession has undoubtedly left a lasting impact, inspiring open conversations about addiction and the importance of prioritizing mental and physical health.
