"Sam Heughan was our Jamie from the moment he walked into the audition room." — Outlander Producer
The world of Outlander is filled with unforgettable characters and gripping stories, but none so compelling as Jamie Fraser. The journey to finding the perfect actor to embody this beloved character was as dramatic as the series itself. Executive producer Maril Davis vividly recalls the moment they first encountered Sam Heughan.
"It was like a needle in a haystack," Davis explains. His audition tape stood out immediately, making it clear that he was destined for this role.
The task of casting Jamie Fraser was daunting. Diana Gabaldon's novels painted Jamie as a tall, strong, and charismatic Highlander—a character with depth, charm, and a bit of humor. Finding an actor who could bring all these qualities to life was no small feat.
Suzanne Smith, the casting director, had been tracking Heughan's career since his drama school days. "There’s not many very tall Scots that are right for Jamie Fraser, so Sam came to mind straight away," Smith reveals.
During the initial round of auditions, Heughan's tape was a revelation. He had the charisma, the charm, and the presence that Jamie Fraser demanded.
